Location of your log cabin holiday

We are Located just above Carlisle, close to the Lake District in the heart of Cumbria.
Here are some basic directions to Shank Wood Log Cabin, please use the postcode CA6 5TY for your Sat Nav:

From the South:









From the North;


Take exit 44 on the M6, turning right onto the A7 signposted to Longtown. Follow the A7 to Longtown turning right at the main cross roads in Longtown with the Graham Arms Hotel on your right. Keep on this road until out of Longtown then turn right, signposted to Solport. Keep on this road for 4 miles without turning off. After a "not suitable for long vehicles" sign stop at the farm on the top of the hill called Whitecloserigg where the keys are held. From here you will be shown to the cabin approximately 1 mile away.

Follow the A7 to Longtown turning left at the main cross roads in Longtown with the Graham Arms Hotel in frount of you. Keep on this road until out of Longtown then turn right, signposted to Solport. Keep on this road for 4 miles without turn off. After a "not suitable for long vehicles" sign stop at the farm on the top of the hill called Whitecloserigg where the keys are held. From here you will be shown to the cabin approximately 1 mile away.

Things to do

 

There are plenty of activities in the local area for you to do and below we have listed some you may be interested in;

Hire a Bike

Why not hire a bike from local Bike 7 in Longtown.

Enjoy the fantatstic Border Reivers Cycle Trail and learn about the history of the area where more than 400 years ago was so dangerous that priests armed themselves with swords and daggers before daring to set foot here due to the Border Rievers family who lived in castles and Pele towers in the area.  These trails are also suitable for Horse riders and walkers.

Horse Riding & Pony Trekking

Why not go horse riding at Bailey Mill pony trekking centre in the wild border forests or take a riding lesson only 10 mins drive from your cabin.  Bailey Mill also provide an “own a pony” for a day, where your child can learn how to muck out, groom a horse and general horse care including a lesson and a forest trek.  A great opportunity for adults to have a day to themselves.

 

Walks

There are miles of walks on your doorstep, and you can explore the riverside and woodland walks Shank Wood Log Cabin has to offer.

Aswell as these walks there is also the opportunity to discover the local area and take the Border Reivers Walk.

Hadrians Wall is nearby and you can walk along part of the wall for a great day out.

With the Lake District only 50 minutes away there are plenty of beautiful walks to discover.  Keswick is the closest part of the Lake District to the cabins.

 

Go Ape!

Whinlater Forest Park in Keswick in the Lake District hosts the highest Go Ape! Adventure course in the UK where you can climb 30ft up a rope ladder, tarzan swing into a giant rope net and then zip wire through the trees, crawl through tunnels and tackle high wire rope bridges.  A great day out for friends and family.

 

Things to do in Carlisle

Only 25 minutes drive from the cabins, Carlisle is your nearest large town and it has plenty of interesting activites to do whilst on your log cabin holiday.

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery boasts a wide range of features, exhibitions and artefacts, brought together in one impressive museum. They provide a fusion of old and new from the Old Tullie House, a classical grade one listed Jacobean building, to the Border Galleries, full of interactive fun. Children and adults can enjoy hands-on exibihits and games , from firing a Roman weapon to climbing a lifesize Hadrians Wall!

Carlisle Castle is over 900 years old and was a constantly updated working fortress until well within living memory.

Displays for the Solway Aviation Museum are found indoors and outdoors. Inside, visitors can study the intriguing exhibits that consist of an air raid shelter, a wartime airfield display, and other informational items regarding aviation. Showcased outside are actual planes and helicopters, including a Vulcan B2 bomber, a Westland helicopter, and an English Electric Lightning. Insightful information is offered during the guided tours.

Visit the beautiful Carlisle Cathedral in the centre of town and learn about its turbulent history and marvel its fantastic stained glass windows.

Shopping & Entertainment

There are plenty of shops in Carlisle including all the high street shops there is a department store called Hoopers where you will find high end fashion clothes.

Cinema

The Vue Cinema in Carlisle shows all box office films and is located on Botchergate near the centre of town.

 

Pubs and Restaurants on you log cabin holiday

The nearest local pub is called the Drove Inn and it is 10 minutes drive away and does fantastic Cumbrian steaks. Find The Drove Inn from your Cabin.

Just a little further on from the there is another pub called The Crossings and this also does great food sourced locally. Find The Crossings from your Cabin.

Things to do in Brampton

Brampton is a small charming market town that has around 4000 inhabitants.

Great shops include Cranstons the butchers where you can pick up locally sourced cumbrian meat which is great quality.

There is also a local grocery selling fresh vegetables, a health food shop, and a local Co-op for all your needs.

The Famous Cumbrian Antiques Centre is located in Brampton where you can find wonderful antiques.

Things to do in Longtown

Longtown is also a small market town which is steeped in history as it is on the border of Scotland and England. The Solway Firth is located close to Longtown which is popular with bird watchers.

It has a local butchers, bakery called Gretna Bakery, and a fantastic fish and chip shop called the Border Cod which David Cameron visited on his campaign!
